In the Mix 2023

Collaborative Science for Energy Storage

In the Mix is a two-day, interactive workshop designed for undergraduates to gain hands-on experience with data science, theory, and experimental techniques that are critical to the development of materials for new generations of battery technologies. Participants will also tour the English Farms Wind Farm and learn how batteries help the development of renewable energy resources.

Throughout this two-day workshop, students will gain entry-level skill in three key fields in battery research. Additionally, participants will:

  • gain experience working in team science.
  • see themselves as scientists and will be able to contribute as we work together to solve big, societally relevant problems.
  • understand the value of/rationale for generating and using big data.
  • acquire practical skills that equip them to continue contributing to scientific research beyond In the Mix.

Information will be periodically updated on this website.
This workshop is being developed as part of the NSF EPSCoR D3TaLES Project through NSF Cooperative Agreement 2019574.

Should you have questions, please contact Dr. Craig Teague at CTeague@cornellcollege.edu.

FAQ

The workshop begins at 9 am on Thursday, May 18th 2023 and ends with dinner on Friday, May 19th, 2023. Most events will occur in Iowa City, with transportation provided for the wind farm tour.

Undergraduate students enrolled at any Iowa or Kentucky college or university are encouraged to participate. If space allows, graduate students enrolled at any Iowa or Kentucky college or university are also welcome to participate.

If commuting to the workshop from a personnel residence or off-campus hotel, please arrive by 9 am on both Thursday and Friday. Those travelling to participate and staying on-campus at the Iowa House Hotel may arrive Wednesday evening if participating in In the Mix only. D3TaLES personnel participating in the Annual Meeting may arrive earlier in the week; please indicate your anticipated arrival date on the registration form.

Any undergraduate students as well as any D3TaLES personnel (including undergraduate, MS, and PhD students, post-docs, and senior personnel).

For safety in the laboratory and during the tour of English Farms Wind Farm, participants must wear closed-toed shoes (preferably boots or sneakers; no flip flops or high heels) and jeans or long pants (no skin showing below the waist). Temperatures in Iowa City during this time of year typically range from the mid-50s °F to the mid-70s °F. All University of Iowa buildings are air-conditioned.

Laptop computers would be helpful.

The nearest airport is the Eastern Iowa Airport (CID) in Cedar Rapids, IA (30 minutes from Iowa City), and the next closest is the Quad City International Airport (MLI) in Moline, IL (1 hour from Iowa City). Larger airports are in Des Moines (2 hours from Iowa City) and Chicago (3.5 hours from Iowa City). Amtrak runs through Mount Pleasant, IA (50 minutes from Iowa City).

Participants are responsible for their own transportation to and from the University of Iowa campus. Parking is available on campus, sometimes with a fee, and campus buildings are within walking distance of one another. Transportation to the wind farm tour is provided.

Participants should procure their own breakfast before arriving. Lunch and dinner will be provided for all participants on both days.

Except for the wind farm tour, all activities for In the Mix as well as the D3TaLES Annual meeting will take place at the University of Iowa.

Lodging in Iowa City or Coralville would be closest. There is also lodging near the Eastern Iowa Airport and in Cedar Rapids.

Please describe these needs on the registration form, and someone from the In the Mix leadership team will contact you to ensure your safe and comfortable participation in the workshop.
